Thursday Report for The Subcontinental, June 20, 2002
This is the Subcontinental Institute's bi-weekly report to inform
you about the recent happenings at the organization and journal.
NEWS HIGHLIGHTS
Earlier this month, Subcontinental staff met with Neil Patel,
Staff Secretary for the Office of the Vice-President to discuss
how best to develop issue based South Asian American political
involvement. His insights were helpful and encouraging.
Subcontinental staff also recently attended a meeting with
Congressman Joe Wilson, 1st District-SC. He commented, "A
publication that catalogues current thought on this vital
community would be a welcome and important resource to policy
makers. I am convinced that the South Asian American community
can play a vital role in helping shape America's policies for
both domestic and foreign issues."
Subcontinental representatives attended the South Asian
Journalist Association's (SAJA) annual convention on June 14-16
in New York. Several journalists and writers expressed great
interest in contributing articles to the journal. Sree
Sreenivasan, Associate Professor, Columbia Graduate School of
Journalism and Co-Founder, South Asian Journalists Association
commented "I know of no other journal like The Subcontinental.
Finally, a publication that will give political voice to the
South Asian community. It is an idea whose time has come."
