Stephen Cohen has written, co-authored, and edited eight books including The Pakistan Army, The Indian Army, and India: Emergent Power? He is currently studying American policy and Pakistan. He joined the Brookings Institution in September 1998 as a Senior Fellow in Foreign Policy Studies.
Prior to joining Brookings, Cohen was Professor of History and Political Science ar the University of Illinois and founding Director of their program in Arms Control, Disarmament, and International Security. In 1992-93, he was Scholar-in-Residence at the Ford Foundation, New Delhi. From 1985-97, he was a member of the Policy Planning Staff of the US Department of State advising on South Asia. He has served on recent study groups and task forces examining American relations with South Asian nations working with the Asia Foundation (2000), Council of Foreign Relations (1996), and Asia Society (1994).
Professor Cohen received B.A. and M.A. degrees in Political Science from the University of Chicago, and a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin.
